“Let Freedom Ring-Honor our Veterans”
Sometimes we take our freedom for granted and forget those men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces throughout proud history. Many scarified much and gave their lives so that we can enjoy our way of life. We needed to recognize the many men and women veterans in Oneida County who left their homes, jobs, and families to defend this country.
The American Legion Post #65 and Ladies Auxiliary along with the City of Malad and Oneida County got together in 2003 and made a decision to construct a Veterans Memorial to honor Oneida County Veterans.
A twenty man and woman committee were formed consisting of citizens from all parts of the county. This committee spearheaded the project and raised the necessary funding. Malad City donated the project and funded some of the basic concrete work. Oneida county relocated the existing curb, gutter and sidewalk and prepared the site for construction.
After two years of hard work by the committee and $80,000 in donations from many, many, citizens and former citizens, the memorial was finished. There are 1700 names of Oneida County Veterans listed on the memorial from WW1 to the present. The memorial was dedicated on July 16, 2005.
All veterans who meet the following requirements had/can have their names engraved on the memorial.
- The veteran must have served honorably in the armed forces of the United States of America.
- In addition to qualify as legitimate Oneida County Veteran, the veteran must meet at least one of the following requirements.
- To have been born and/or educated in Oneida County.
- To have entered the Armed Forces from Oneida County.
- To have been a resident of Oneida County for the past ten years.
